TYLER, TX (KLTV) – A group from Tyler’s Sister City delegation is back home after a few days in San Miguel, Mexico.
The two have been sister cities for years, but in an idle relationship: something that some East Texas diplomacy is looking to change.
“Initially what we wanted to do was to reconnect with the new administration,” Tyler Sister City delegate Price Arredondo said.
Arredondo is back home after a five-day trip to San Miguel, which also included members from Tyler’s business community and Tyler Junior College.
The Mexican tourist destination and Tyler have been sister cities since 2010, but Arredondo said under a previous administration, San Miguel was less active in the program.
Now, both cities are looking ahead to new opportunities education and business opportunities.
“They have diversified their economy, they’ve got a wonderful culinary school and something they’ve established in the last few years is a technology park,” Arredondo said.
San Miguel is the closest of Tyler’s sister cities by distance, which Arredondo said can be an important factor for some East Texans.
“There’s also obviously a high Hispanic population here and a lot of that population is from the state of Guanajuato, which is where San Miguel is located,” Arredondo said.
He added that moving forward, the cities will look at ways both can benefit.
“Going to be working and looking at what I call those niche opportunities that we can build to do some exchange program where students and professors can benefit,” Arredondo said.
The next step is for the partnership, Arredondo said, is to have San Miguel delegates visit Tyler, which is something in the works for 2017.
