Peace Pole installed at Tyler Rose Garden

The Tyler Sister Cities organization unveiled its first Peace Pole at the Tyler Municipal Rose Garden on May 23, 2018.

The pole has directional signs pointing to our sister cities around the world, as well as an accompanying sign that explains the project.

It reads:

May Peace Prevail on Earth
This message is intended to link communities of people internationally. There are tens of thousands of Peace Poles in 180 counties all over the world. The tradition began in Japan in 1955 by Masahisa Goi. Each blade of this pole represents one of the “sister cities” of Tyler and depicts the name of the city with the distance in miles from this point to that international city. The sign blades are mounted so as to point in the direction of that international city.

Those in attendance for the ceremony included: Indre Pemberton (Secretary), Glen Van Dyke (Past President), Mickey Slimp (Vice President), Councilmember Bob Westbrook, Dr. Teresa Kennedy (President), Councilmember Linda Sellers, Mark Krizmanic (Treasurer), Councilmember Don Warren, Bob McComb (City of Tyler Parks & Rec) , Russ Jackson (Board of Directors; City of Tyler Director of Parks & Rec).

This world-famous Tyler Municipal Rose garden, the largest in America, features 14 acres, thousands of rose bushes, and more than 300 varieties of roses & 600 beds.

It is open daily from sunrise to sunset and is located at 420 Rose Park Drive in Tyler.
