Tyler Sister Cities accepting donations for flood relief efforts in Polish sister city

Tyler Sister Cities is collecting monetary donations to support relief efforts in its sister city Jelenia Góra, Poland, which is experiencing massive flooding.

The swollen Bóbr River breached its banks, sending floodwaters into the streets of the 900-year-old city, known for its Baroque houses and beautiful landscapes.

According to Michał Kryla, a spokesperson for the mayor of Jelenia Góra, the city is under a State of National Disaster.

“Unfortunately our city has suffered over the last 3 days due to the flooding that has occurred in our city. For 2 days we evacuated about 500 people from flooded houses and the losses the city has suffered will be counted in millions.”

Michael Howell, current president of Tyler Sister Cities, has pledged the organization’s support in coordinating fundraising efforts in the Tyler area.

“Our Polish sister city has experienced a tremendous amount of flooding due to recent storms,” Howell said. “The pictures tell the story of the devastation more than words can convey.”

On Sunday, the city of Jelenia Góra alerted resident to prepare for the possibility of more evacuations.

A shelter for affected residents has been set up in a public school to provide sleeping and hygiene accommodations, as well as meals.

“The collected funds will be transferred to the most needy residents,” Kryla said.

Tyler and Jelenia Góra, a city of about 77-thousand residents, have been sister cities since 1993.
