Tyler’s sister city partnership with Liberia, Costa Rica became official in 2013. Since then, the relationship has centered on shared interests in the areas of education and service. The involvement of Tyler Junior College and UT Tyler has been central to strengthening ties. The institutions have sponsored numerous service learning travel study trips since 2009.
Past service projects have included painting school buildings, constructing classrooms and restroom facilities, planting trees to support reforestation, building a soccer field and playground, teaching English as a second language to school kids, and providing health seminars on topics including first aid and the dangers of tobacco.
Tyler Sister Cities collaborated with Tyler Junior College and The University of Texas at Tyler to offer an academic scholarship to two students from Liberia to complete academic programs in Tyler, including two years of study at TJC (2014-2016) and two years of study at UT Tyler (2016-2018). The scholarship recipients were: Mr. Andy Alvarado (Bachelor of Arts Business/Marketing) and Ms. Yanitza Davila (Master’s Program in Business).
Note: Our partnership with Liberia is currently on ‘Emeritus’ status. The local organization is working to rebuild, post-COVID-19 pandemic. We are actively working to reestablish and sustain this relationship.
